FORD'S COLONY - BLACKHEATH (Williamsburg)

Rated 4.5 stars Rating based on (11) customer reviews

Surcharge From $2.00

Dan Maples created the Blackheath from an existing nine of the former Gold Course and a complete new nine holes. The result is a truly intriguing and beautiful par-71, 6621-yard layout. It's one of those courses where upon completion of your round you can easily replay all 18 holes in your mind. Particularly memorable is the 356-yard 18th hole with water down the right, dense woods down the left, and an island green finish. The Blackheath was rated as "one of the best 12 places to play" by Washington Golf Monthly.

FORD'S COLONY - BLUE HERON (Williamsburg)

Rated 4.5 stars Rating based on (6) customer reviews

Surcharge From $2.00

The longest of the three courses at Ford's Colony, Blue Heron is typical Dan Maples -- gorgeous to look at, fun to play, yet difficult to score on. The par-five fourth hole is considered the toughest on the course with a meddlesome water hazard lurking behind a fairway bunker off the tee to the right. This hazard will also force many golfers to play it safe on their second shot which creates a tough approach to a small, well-protected green.

This course was the famous White to Red before being changed to its exisitng name. The overall appearance of the course is thick woods on a rolling-to-hilly terrain. The front of this course is flat and watery and the back nine is a bit hillier. There is a variety of sand bunkers, ponds, etched into hardwood flowering trees.

Rated 4 stars Rating based on (22) customer reviews

Surcharge From $2.00

Named as "one of the top 10 places to play in Virginia" and rated 3.5 stars by Golf Digest, Williamsburg National is a course that will fit into everyone's schedule. Located just minutes from most area hotels, the course was carved out of stately maples, cedars and oaks, capturing the flavor of the Virginia landscape. The front nine is relatively flat for the area, with the back nine, though shorter, made up of much more rolling terrain. Many of the greens on the back are either elevated or sitting down in swales making club selection a little more difficult.

The finish is most spectacular as two of the last three holes measure nearly 600 yards each. This popular club has a large local membership and also features a beautiful clubhouse with an excellent restaurant. Play both courses at Williamsburg National for a great 36-hole day.
